Kevin Greene has been a patient football player. He waited for his chance at Auburn. He waited to demonstrate his ability in the NFL. He waited to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The good news is, he doesn’t have to wait for his talents and career to be recognized any longer. After his 12th year of eligibility and 5th time being a finalist, Greene has rightfully earned his place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2016. Take a look below at a summary of his career in the NFL.
Kevin Greene was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the 5th round of the 1985 NFL Draft. He spent eight years with the Rams from 1985-1993 then moved on to play with the Steelers from 1993-1995, the Panthers in 1996, 1998 and 1999, and the 49ers in 1997. A walk-on at Auburn, he was drafted into the NFL as a linebacker – a position he played for the majority of his 15-season career – but he also saw time at defensive end during his tenure with the Rams.
He primarily played on special teams as a rookie, which marked the only year in his career that he did not register a sack in the regular season. He did not start in any game during his second season, but he did play in all 16 games and recorded seven sacks.
Greene’s sack numbers are clearly impressive. From 1986 until 1992, he averaged more than 10 sacks per year then gathered 12.5 in 1993, 14 in 1994 and 14.5 in 1996. He registered a career-high 16.5 sacks in his fourth season and matched that total the following year. His career peaked in 1998, when he recorded 15 sacks and a career-high two interceptions.
This two-time All-Pro selection and five-time Pro Bowler amassed 160 career sacks, the most for any player who was primarily a linebacker. His total sits third in NFL history behind Bruce Smith and Reggie White, both of which are Hall of Famers. During his career, Greene played in six conference championship games and one Super Bowl. He was also a linebacker on the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s All-Decade team for the 1990s.
Greene retired after his 1999 season and later went on to serve as the outside linebackers coach for the Green Bay Packers from 2009-2013. He finished his career tied for 1st for most seasons leading league in sacks, 2nd most seasons with 10 or more sacks, tied for 2nd for most career safeties, 3rd for most career sacks, and 3rd for most opponent fumble recoveries.
